Brunel University London

  Dr Evina Katsou (MSc, PhD) is a Senior Lecturer and Course Director of the Water Engineering MSc at Brunel University London (Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering). Dr Katsou is leading the Water Lab at Brunel University consisting of 5 PhD students and 2 post-doctoral students. Her research activities focus on the development and application of novel physicochemical and biochemical processes/technologies for water and wastewater purification including the application of sorbents for pollutant removal. Furthermore, she has 54 publications in international peer-reviewed scientific journals with impact factor. She has carried out more than 705 presentations in international conferences with proceedings, published 7 chapters in books and has one patent (MI2014A002223 23/12/2014). Dr Katsou has significant experience in the development and implementation of research projects, having participated in several National and European projects. She is the principal investigator (PI) of three on-going H2020 projects, and five UK National projects. Prior her appointment at Brunel University, Dr Katsou worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Verona. She was Co-I in the LEF-BIOWASTE, Marie Curie CIG, FP7-PEOPLE, Co-I and in 14 EU LIFE Environment and LIFE+ projects. She has also been awarded prestigious research grants and prizes including the 2-year postdoctoral scholarship from the Bodossaki Foundation and the Thomaidio Award for the Best PhD thesis (2011) at NTUA. Dr Katsou is the Chair of the Water Engineering group for the New Design Engineering Centre – Consultation Groups (Water Engineering Lab, Chemical Analytical Lab) at Brunel University. Moreover, she is a member of the Cost Action Water_2020: ‘Conceiving Wastewater Treatment in 2020 - Energetic, environmental and economic challenges’ that brings together leading professionals working on complementary areas of wastewater treatment (WWT) at Research Institutions, Industries and Water Agencies from 17 European countries. Evina is an elected management Committee member of the International Water Association (IWA) Specialist Group on Small Water and Wastewater Systems. Dr Katsou has also significant consulting activities since she has been awarded contracts from leading UK water industry partners, including Arup, Sever Trent, BuroHappold Engineering, Anglian Water, and Thames Water.

Theoni-Maria Massara (Civil Engineer: MEng, MSc) is a 3rd-year PhD student of the Institute of Environment, Health and Societies and the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering at Brunel University London. Her PhD topic is: Development of a novel model to quantify nitrous oxide emissions in the biological nutrient removal process of wastewater treatment plants. Theoni has a full 4-year PhD studentship by the London Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Doctoral Training Partnership that is coordinated by the Geography Department of University College London (UCL). Her project is additionally supported and funded by the European Union Research Program C-FOOT-CTRL (EU Framework Program for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020) under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Grant Agreement (No 645769). She has publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals with high impact factor, 1 published chapter in book and multiple presentations in international conferences. Theoni has successfully conducted extended research visits at the Department of Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and at the Advanced Water Management Centre (AWMC) of the University of Queensland. Her research interests include water and wastewater treatment, energy-saving configurations for wastewater treatment, optimization of the operation of wastewater treatment plants, mathematical modelling of greenhouse gas emissions in wastewater treatment plants, and statistical modelling of big datasets. Theoni is supervised by Dr Evina Katsou (Senior Lecturer) and Dr Mark Scrimshaw (Reader) at Brunel University London.

  Vasileia-Kyriakouka Vasilaki (Civil Engineer: MEng, MSc) is a 1st-year PhD student of the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering at Brunel University London. She graduated from the MSc in Water Engineering at Brunel University London. Her MSc dissertation entitled ‘Development of a tool for the Water and Carbon Footprint Assessment of the Dairy Sector’ was awarded with the Dean’s Prize for Innovation and Impact in Master’s Dissertations in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering. Vasileia’s PhD topic is: Investigating energy-efficient processes for wastewater treatment targeting at materials and energy recovery. Her research focuses on the state-of-the-art waste and wastewater treatment schemes for resource recovery, the use of R programming for data mining and chemometrics for process monitoring and optimization. Her research is supported by the HORIZON 2020 SMART-Plant project (Scale-up of low-carbon footprint Material Recovery Techniques for upgrading existing wastewater treatment Plants). Vasileia is supervised by Dr Evina Katsou.

Ataturk University, Turkey

 

Dr Okan Tarik Komesli (MSc, PhD) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Engineering of the Ataturk University. Dr Komesli completed his MSc and PhD studies in the Department of Environmental Engineering of the Middle East Technical University. During his MSc, the first full-scale membrane bioreactor (MBR) in Turkey was established and operated. During his PhD, he investigated the removal of endocrine disrupter compounds with different MBR configurations, along with the fate of endocrine disrupter compounds in different wastewater treatment plants belonging to different regions. He won the best PhD Thesis Award. Dr Komesli is also an expert on Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry. He is currently supervising 1 PhD and 4 MSc students. His research mainly focuses on the treatment and reuse of municipal and industrial wastewater, sustainable development, membrane systems, endocrine disrupter compounds, and sludge minimization. Okan has 20 publications in international peer-reviewed scientific journals with impact factor. He is also the founder and general manager of Komesli R&D Ltd which designs, produces and operates high-technology wastewater treatment systems for discharge and reuse. Dr Komesli is coordinating many R&D projects enhancing the collaboration between academia and industry in Turkey. He is the director of the International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE) and participates is in the patent committee of the Ataturk University.

Senba Komesli (Biologist- Molecular Biology and Genetics, MSc) is a biologist specializing in molecular biology and genetics. Her first MSc was completed in the Department of Education of the Celal Bayar University. She was then awarded her second MSc in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics of the Ataturk University. Senba is currently doing her PhD in Genetics and Molecular Biology-Biotechnology in Ataturk University. She is an expert on environmental biotechnology, wastewater treatment systems, and species determination in activated sludge. Senba is also a licensed laboratory animal specialist. Furthermore, she is environmental control officer and director of administrative services in Komesli R&D Ltd. She has been involved in several national and international projects.

Onur Sozudogru (MSc) is a Research Assistant in the Department of Environmental Engineering of the Ataturk University. He graduated from the Department of Environmental Engineering in Cumhuriyet University, and has performed MSc research οn the treatment of highly nitrogenous wastewater via the application of a sequence batch reactor coupled with a submerged membrane bioreactor. Onur is currently a 3rd-year PhD student in the Department of Environmental Engineering of the Ataturk University. His PhD topic is: Investigation of the Removal of Endocrine Disruptor Compounds by Advanced Electrooxidation Systems integrated in Membrane Bioreactor. He has publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals with impact factor and multiple presentations in national and international conferences. His main research interests include: implementation of membrane bioreactors for the treatment of domestic and industrial wastewater, biological nutrient removal, and heavy metal removal via the application of membrane bioreactors and adsorption process. Onur is supervised by Dr Okan Tarik Komesli.
